Letter to Parents of 5th Grade Students

January 7, 2019

Dear Parents of Fifth Grade Students:

On behalf of the faculty and administration at Millburn Middle School, I would like to welcome all of you to our school community! This our first official communication to you as we begin to prepare for the transition of your child(ren) from the Washington School to Millburn Middle School.  Middle School is an important time of transition in the life of preadolescents, and I am confident that our middle school teaching staff, curriculum, and programs will provide your child with so many great and enriching opportunities to grow in every way.

The Middle School will host an orientation for fifth grade parents on March 28, 2019.  You are cordially invited to attend either the 9:00 AM or 7:00 PM session, both presentations will be held in our auditorium.

Students entering the sixth grade will be scheduled for Math, LAR/ELA, History and Science as part of their schedule. Students are given the opportunity to select the World Language that they would like to study during Middle School.

Please use this link to the 2019-2020 6th Grade World Language Selection Form to select your child's world language. There are only two World Language options: French or Spanish. Before making a selection, please discuss with your child what world language they would like to study during middle school. Students will continue with the same language throughout their middle school experience. When your son/daughter goes to Millburn High School they will have the option to continue with the language or selection they made in middle school or select a new language. Please complete the 6th Grade World Language Selection Form no later than February 2, 2019. If you need to change your selection you will need to contact your child's Middle School Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Lauren Bach at

Our goal is to create balanced and integrated teams of students that will provide an optimal experience for our incoming 6th graders. As a result, we do not accept requests for students to be on the same teams as their friends nor do we accept requests for students to be on a specific team or with certain teachers.  Parents of older children who have attended the Middle School may submit a request that their son/daughter NOT be placed with a specific teacher who provided instruction for an older sibling. Please send me an email at with the name of the teacher and the name of your older child no later than February 9, 2018.  Scheduling of teams will be accomplished by the administration at the Middle School; therefore, please do not contact the guidance department.

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services now requires that every child entering sixth grade receive one dose of Meningococcal Vaccine and one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis).  Documentation showing that your child has received these updated immunizations must be provided to our school nurse, Mrs. Marybeth Clark,  PRIOR TO THE OPENING OF SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER.  Please take your child to your pediatrician before the end of the current school year and send or bring the documentation with the student’s name clearly printed on it to Mrs. Clark at the Middle School,  25 Old Short Hills Road, Millburn, NJ 07041. Please carefully review the attached letter from Mrs. Clark, Millburn Middle School Nurse, regarding requirements for 6th-grade health records and other relevant information pertaining to the health office.

I look forward to welcoming you in person to the Middle School.  Please accept my wishes for a healthy and happy new year!

John Connolly
